(Though in the mountains at night, <strong>it can actually freeze<\/strong>.)  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The weather can be unpredictable, but it&#8217;s an island where you can conquer <strong>Spain&#8217;s highest mountain<\/strong> in the morning and swim in the sea in the afternoon, experiencing volcanic landscapes, rainforests, snow, cold, and heat. All in one day. That&#8217;s exactly what Tenerife is like. This island is <strong>a great choice for everyone<\/strong> \u2013 nature lovers, adventurers, <strong>families with children<\/strong>, and those just looking to relax on the beach.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_best_way_to_get_to_Tenerife\"><\/span><strong>What&#8217;s the best way to get to Tenerife? <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your departing airport, return ticket prices from London can start at around <strong>20\u20ac<\/strong> if you book in advance. I prefer searching on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyscanner.cz\/?irclickid=_ggq9d0qvv9kfawqh1ir0fiufcu220uhdf3fkl20y00&amp;associateid=AFF_TRA_19354_00001&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_source=1443135-Michaela.hrda&amp;utm_campaign=&amp;campaign_id=1443135&amp;utm_content=Online%20Tracking%20Link&amp;adid=1027991&amp;click_timestamp=1740845297530&amp;irmweb=&amp;irgwc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Skyscanner<\/a> because they often have <strong>better prices <\/strong>than the carriers themselves. You can find out <a href=\"https:\/\/misketravels.cz\/en\/how-to-find-cheap-flights-which-day-of-the-week-to-buy-them-and-other-tips\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how to get cheap flights<\/a> in this <a href=\"https:\/\/misketravels.cz\/en\/how-to-find-cheap-flights-which-day-of-the-week-to-buy-them-and-other-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be aware that there are 2 airports in Tenerife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2708 <strong>Tenerife South Airport (Reina Sofia)<\/strong> \u2013 the main tourist airport, close to the resorts<br>\u2708 <strong>Tenerife North Airport<\/strong> \u2013 closer to Santa Cruz and Anaga<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re planning to stay in the south, you probably want to land at <strong>Reina Sofia<\/strong> airport. If you&#8217;re heading more for hiking and greener nature, a flight to the <strong>northern airport<\/strong> is worth it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t make the <strong>same mistake<\/strong> I did, flying to the south but booking your <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.stay22.com\/michaelahrda\/adgOQgf5Nz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">car <\/a>at the north. \ud83d\ude42 I was very close to booking my accommodation in the north too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Transport_in_Tenerife\"><\/span>Transport in Tenerife<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to explore Tenerife is by <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.stay22.com\/michaelahrda\/adgOQgf5Nz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renting a car<\/a>, which gives you the freedom to visit even remote places. Rental prices <strong>start at \u20ac20 per day<\/strong>, fuel is cheap, and the roads are in good condition, although mountain routes can be challenging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don&#8217;t want to drive, the <strong>TITSA<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.titsa.com\/index.php\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">buses<\/a> work well, connecting airports, towns, and tourist locations. Tickets start from \u20ac1.50, but a prepaid <strong>BONO card<\/strong> is <strong>better value<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Taxis <\/strong>are reliable but more expensive (e.g., Airport \u2013 Playa de las Am\u00e9ricas approx. \u20ac30). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For traveling between islands, you can use ferries from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.directferries.com\/?dfpid=6377&amp;affid=885723&amp;rurl=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fred Olsen Express<\/a> and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.directferries.com\/?dfpid=6377&amp;affid=885723&amp;rurl=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Naviera Armas<\/strong><\/a>, which connect Tenerife with La Gomera, Gran Canaria, and other islands. I recommend searching on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.directferries.com\/?dfpid=6377&amp;affid=885723&amp;rurl=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Direct Ferries<\/a>, as it gives you all the available options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_stay_in_Tenerife\"><\/span><strong>Where to stay in Tenerife?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend <strong>booking well in advance<\/strong>; prices really go up, and last-minute deals usually don&#8217;t pay off much in touristy Tenerife. Especially if you&#8217;re going <strong>over Christmas, New Year, or Carnival. <\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In the north in Puerto de la Cruz<\/strong> &#8211; adults only &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.stay22.com\/michaelahrda\/3ZA6xgnyYO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Silken Saaj Maar<\/a> &#8211; beautiful sea views, great ratings <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In the south in El M\u00e9dano<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.stay22.com\/michaelahrda\/nE3xUAHXEn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sweet home apartments<\/a> &#8211; a bit more luxurious at a still reasonable price. A cheaper option here is <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.stay22.com\/michaelahrda\/Hz14vl7V8b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nest Hostel<\/a>, where we even found a screw-on gas canister.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In beautiful La Laguna<\/strong> &#8211; a more expensive but gorgeous option is <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.stay22.com\/michaelahrda\/iLJgCXSliS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grand Hotel<\/a>, and again, the cheaper one is <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.stay22.com\/michaelahrda\/j0tW7BDPM4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nest The island offers a <strong>wide range of routes <\/strong>\u2013 from easy coastal walks to challenging mountain climbs. Thanks to the diverse landscape, misty forests, and volcanic areas, every hiker will find something for themselves.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my <a href=\"https:\/\/misketravels.cz\/en\/canary-islands-map-of-200-spots-on-tenerife-and-la-gomera\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"4211\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map <\/a>you&#8217;ll find another <strong>nearly 40 routes<\/strong> you can head out on in Tenerife and La Gomera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Barranco de Masca <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>A famous canyon leading to the ocean<\/strong>. One of the best-known routes in Tenerife starts in the village of <strong>Masca<\/strong> and leads through a steep canyon all the way to the ocean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The route is approximately <strong>5 km one way<\/strong> and the descent takes around <strong>2.5\u20133 hours<\/strong>. At the bottom of the canyon, it&#8217;s possible to take a <strong>water taxi<\/strong> back to Los Gigantes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you head to the village of Masca, the locals will certainly appreciate it if you <strong>come by bus.<\/strong> There&#8217;s a big problem with parking and there&#8217;s talk that in the future, entry will only be allowed by shuttle bus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caminobarrancodemasca.com\/en\/activities\/booking\/book-your-visit-to-the-masca-trail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">permit<\/a> for the route, which isn&#8217;t exactly cheap. But it addresses <strong>overtourism<\/strong>, so I approve. However, we didn&#8217;t do it because of the price; we preferred to walk elsewhere and invest the money in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/s\/?q=stargazing+tenerife&amp;searchSource=3&amp;partner_id=KP8DDJM&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stargazing.<\/a>   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. You won&#8217;t find this out anywhere else but at the bottom of the cable car, or when a <strong>ranger catches you on the trail<\/strong> like they did us.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you head out early, you probably won&#8217;t run into a ranger; just make sure to bring <strong>crampons and the necessary equipment! <\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Long_GR_hiking_trails\"><\/span><strong>Long GR hiking trails <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tenerife has several long <strong>GR (Gran Recorrido)<\/strong> routes, which are marked with red and white signs and connect different parts of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>GR 131 \u2013 Route across the whole island<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the longest and most demanding routes in Tenerife. GR 131 starts in the port of Santa Cruz and leads all the way to the south of the island through the mountains. The total length is approximately <strong>83 km<\/strong> and is divided into several stages. From the map, it seemed to me that the trail is only varied in the national park and then leads a lot through the forest, which is beautiful in Tenerife but always the same. I can&#8217;t handle that; I need variety on a trail, and I managed to achieve that by connecting my own trails.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Water is also a problem here <\/strong>\u2013 there isn&#8217;t much of it. I visited the park myself about 10 years ago and it really was a great experience that was worth the money. But I can&#8217;t compare it with other parks, as I haven&#8217;t visited many similar ones.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-gyg-widget=\"auto\" data-gyg-partner-id=\"KP8DDJM\" data-gyg-cmp=\"Tenerife\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Loro Parque \u2013 one of the best zoos in Europe<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Loro Parque in <strong>Puerto de la Cruz<\/strong> is reportedly one of the best zoos in the world and a popular attraction in Tenerife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Eagle and dolphin shows<\/strong> \u2013 a spectacle for children and adults<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Planet Penguin<\/strong> \u2013 one of the largest penguin exhibits in the world<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aquarium with an underwater tunnel<\/strong> \u2013 a close-up look at sharks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tigers, gorillas, parrots, and other exotic animals<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Loro Parque prides itself on top-notch animal care and <strong>conservation projects<\/strong>. If you&#8217;re traveling to Tenerife with children, you probably shouldn&#8217;t miss this place. I didn&#8217;t visit myself due to my strict principles, so I can&#8217;t judge, but I can&#8217;t leave it out of these tips as it&#8217;s said to be truly top-tier in Europe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Santa_Cruz_de_Tenerife_%E2%80%93_the_islands_capital\"><\/span><strong>Santa Cruz de Tenerife \u2013 the island&#8217;s capital<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Santa Cruz is the cultural center of the island and offers many interesting places:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plaza de Espa\u00f1a<\/strong> \u2013 the main square with a beautiful fountain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auditoriodetenerife.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Auditorio de Tenerife<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 an iconic modern building resembling the Sydney Opera House. If there&#8217;s a <strong>concert<\/strong> here, I definitely recommend it. If you like <strong>peaceful and photogenic places<\/strong>, definitely include it in your itinerary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whale_and_dolphin_watching\"><\/span><strong>Whale and dolphin watching<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It might sound a bit exaggerated, but Tenerife really is one of the best places in the world, or at least in Europe, for <strong>watching marine mammals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Los Gigantes<\/strong> area is ideal for boat trips<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The most common species here are <strong>bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales<\/strong> \u2013 we even spotted dolphins during a simple ferry trip to the neighboring island. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For eco-friendly watching, I recommend choosing certified operators<\/strong> who respect marine life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-gyg-widget=\"auto\" data-gyg-partner-id=\"KP8DDJM\" data-gyg-cmp=\"Tenerife\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stargazing_in_Tenerife_%E2%80%93_one_of_the_best_destinations_in_the_world\"><\/span><strong>Stargazing in Tenerife \u2013 one of the best destinations in the world<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tenerife is considered <strong>one of the three best destinations in the world<\/strong> for stargazing, along with the Atacama Desert in Chile and Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The reason is the <strong>clear sky, minimal light pollution, and high altitude<\/strong>, which provides <strong>ideal conditions for astronomical observations<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to try <strong>astrotourism<\/strong>, Tenerife is the place! You can book a <strong>professional night excursion with telescopes<\/strong>, or simply take a <strong>blanket and binoculars<\/strong> and head into the mountains. This unique experience will allow you to see the stars like never before!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don&#8217;t be misled! <strong>You won&#8217;t be getting a tour <\/strong>of a huge astronomical observatory, but rather <strong>a group of astronomers with their own telescopes<\/strong>, scattered around parking lots throughout the park. We were a bit surprised, but in the end, it was a great experience that I can definitely recommend. There are several official campsites in Tenerife and on the neighboring islands, but wild camping is <strong>regulated<\/strong> and requires a <strong>permit<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Official campsites in Tenerife<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udfd5 <strong>Zona de Acampada de Ch\u00edo<\/strong> \u2013 located near Teide National Park, ideal for mountain hiking.<br>\ud83c\udfd5 <strong>Camping Las Ra\u00edces<\/strong> \u2013 located in the La Esperanza area, a great spot for those wanting to explore the north of the island.<br>\ud83c\udfd5 <strong>Camping Punta del Hidalgo<\/strong> \u2013 right by the ocean, suitable for surfing lovers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camping is popular in the Canary Islands, but it&#8217;s necessary to <strong>apply for a permit in advance<\/strong> through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenerife.es\/portalcabtfe\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cabildo de Tenerife<\/a> authorities. So officially, <strong>it&#8217;s not allowed without a permit<\/strong>, but <strong>it&#8217;s often tolerated<\/strong> if you follow basic camping principles and leave no trace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to <strong>camp in a car<\/strong>, that is allowed, but <strong>you mustn&#8217;t use any camping gear<\/strong>. So taking out a chair or table is no longer allowed, but you can sleep in the car.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_get_a_camping_gas_canister_for_cooking\"><\/span><strong>Where to get a camping gas canister for cooking?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re planning on camping or hiking, you can buy cooking canisters in stores like <strong>Decathlon<\/strong> or specialized outdoor shops in larger towns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During our visit at the end of 2024 and beginning of 2025, it was actually quite a miracle to find a <strong>screw-on<\/strong> canister \u2013 <strong>they were sold out everywhere,<\/strong> including Decathlon. Almost everywhere, even in small village shops, they have <strong>pierceable<\/strong> canisters.
